New Equipment – The Trophy Ridge Meat Seeker

Every season I like to try out some new equipment, as I am always trying to find a way to improve and find something that works better than what I am currently using. This past season I took the opportunity to try out Trophy Ridge’s Meat Seeker Broadheads. This is a newer version of the mechanical broadheads and I have to say that there is a marked improvement over the ones that I have tried in the past.

How they Work

The Trophy Ridge Meat Seeker uses a piston hammer setup that will drive forward upon impacting the target and release the blades outwards. The piston hammer is an improvement on the earlier versions of the mechanical broadheads in that it deploys quickly and does not fail to drive the blades forward. This reduces the loss of kinetic energy upon impact and delivers a more lethal blow to the target. The blades come out upon impact to deliver a cutting diameter of an inch and a half, which means that the entry (and exit) wound is larger. This leaves a better blood trail and increases the chances of a kill on the first shot.

The Meat Seekers reduce the amount of deflection because of the clean deployment of the blades and this means a more likely kill shot and better chance of a clean pass-through. They use an O-Ring setup which is the best that I have experienced on this type of broadhead. There is absolutely no movement in the blades when they are in the quiver or when you are setting up the bow for the shot. This is important because you do not want to scare away your target with the rattling that some varieties of broadhead tend to make when you are getting ready to shoot. There are some broadheads out on the market that I won’t name, but I will let you know that they are not created equal and some other brands will see the blades getting out of place when they are in the quiver. That is not a good situation and you can lose a good target that way.

The first time out with the Meat Seeker broadheads I was hunting deer and I had a doe in my sights at about 50 yards. I got set up without a sound, and when I let the arrow go I got good placement right behind the shoulder. The wound was devastating. The Meat Seekers have a one and a half inch cutting diameter, and the bleeding started immediately. The target did not get far before falling, maybe about 30 yards and it was down. The blood trail was excellent, not that I needed it this time but it was nice to know that it was effective. The shot didn’t get clean through the animal but went most of the way, and I was happy to find that the broadhead was not damaged at all. The target was damaged though; both lungs were passed through and the tip had come right out the other side. At this distance this was a pretty good result and at a slightly closer range the arrow would have come right through the other side. I was using a sixty pound bow which is not the biggest but had enough power on this day. The Trophy Ridge Meat Seekers did the job over and over again and I highly recommend giving them a try.
